Deviating migration route

07 November 2023

Weather conditions often have a significant impact on the migratory behavior of birds. In the first days of November, large numbers of southbound Little Gulls were seen in the Wadden Sea. Several Leach's Storm Petrels and a few British Storm Petrels also chose this route. These species typically migrate south via the North Sea. It is highly likely that the strong southern storm Ciarán was responsible for this 'deviating' migration route.

Bohemian Waxwings were also seen again in recent weeks. The largest number was a group of no less than twenty-six birds that flew onto the island near the lighthouse. So far this autumn, two Isabelline Wheatears have been observed. The first sighting was on October 22, and the second on October 31. This vagrant from Southeastern Europe and Asia had previously only been seen three times on Texel. In recent years, several Pallid Swifts have been observed every autumn. This fall, multiple individuals of this Southern European breeding bird have also been seen. A rare Alpine Swift flew over the island on November 1.
