Bluethroat, Red-breasted Goose and Blue-winged Teal

06 May 2026

Colors are quite often used in bird names. Not so surprising when you consider that there are nearly ten thousand bird species. Just try to give each of them a unique name.

While the first Bluethroats are already busy gathering food for their young, other species are still in their wintering grounds. Think, for example, of Brent Geese. And sometimes there is something rare among them, like a Red-breasted Goose.

In the coming weeks, the Brent Geese will depart, and the Red-breasted Goose will also head for the far north.

Another rarity recently appeared in the Waal and Burg polder and was later found again in a forest near De Koog. Swimming in a wet and marshy area, the little duck seemed to be enjoying herself perfectly. This Blue-winged Teal will have more difficulty finding its way to its breeding ground. That is, after all, in North America.........
