25 March 2026

After a long absence, I will try again to share messages regularly. The first species I wanted to see this year was of course Black-faced Bunting, which had already been discovered last December. This rarity has now been present for more than three months in a garden on Texel. Black-faced Bunting is a breeding bird from Siberia and Mongolia. The bird on Texel is the first 'twitchable' one for the Netherlands and has now been visited by many birdwatchers from home and abroad.

At the moment, the weather conditions are moderate. Strong wind and a low temperature. 'March has a sting in its tail'. That does not change the fact that the first Bluethroats are already making themselves seen and heard. Other species such as Wheatear, Sedge Warbler, and Willow Warbler will appear within a few days. Bearded Reedlings, on the other hand, are present all year round. On Texel, the Mok Bay is the best place to see this beautiful reed bird. To add some color to this post, I have included a recent photo of a posing male.
